Richard spent much of his youth in the employ of the East Riding Military Police. During World War I, he became a stretcher and he was even awarded the Victoria Cross. After the war he was made a Baron by King John of England and died at the age of 33.

The Hathersage family were prominent citizens of the region. They were also prominent within the city. Their extensive interests in the arts and sciences kept them well-known in the region. The Hathersage family were keen fans of football and enjoyed watching matches throughout the world. They hosted the annual British Football Grand Prix in Hathersage on occasion. The race is now known as the Grand Prix de Yorkshire. Richard was also a keen fisherman and he and his wife Vera had two daughters and one son.

The St. Mary Church in Hathersage is a five hundred-year-old church that stands proud on the waterfront. Visitors and tourists still stop by on a regular basis for a morning service. It has been said of the St. Mary Church that it is haunted. A more appropriate word for it would be spiritual.

Richard was not just a passionate sportsman but also enjoyed fishing and sailing. He managed to sail to India to see the wonderful marvels of the Indian Ocean. On this trip he took a ship to the vicinity of the Straits of Muscat. He returned home telling of the immense happiness he felt in taking part in such a great adventure.

This famous man and woman from West Yorkshire did more than just enjoy their leisure time. They contributed greatly to the news of the region. Without them there would have been no newspapers or news broadcasts. They were known around the world as "The Great Britain Shipping News". The news of the world does indeed owe them a lot.
