History of Rugby Football

American football, also called football in the United States, and sometimes called gridiron, is an organized team sport played by two sides of eleven players each with goalposts on the opposite ends of the rectangular field. This game is played for entertainment purposes only and has no real value to the players or to the teams. It is largely considered a leisure activity that many college and professional athletes engage in to unwind after a long day of work or to get in some extra training before a big game. It originated in early nineteenth century England, where it was referred to as "football." Currently there are two major professional football leagues in the US, the National Football League (NHL) and the National Basketball League (NBA). Professional football is currently the highest-grossing sports event in terms of revenue generated, and the two leagues combine to form the NFL. The NBA has attempted to enter into a professional soccer league, but to no avail. In addition to the professional leagues, there are college football programs that offer competitive football experience. College football allows students who are not yet professionally active a chance to play a sport and earn a college degree while doing so.

Rugby, also known as Australian Rules Football, is a game played between two teams of fifteen players each. It is a fairly simple game, consisting of a throw, try, and pass hybrid that tests both skill and mental toughness. Like football, rugby is played for fun, with little regard for perfection or strategic planning. Unlike football, rugby uses a form of rugby tackling known as scrum, in which players hit the ball with their feet.

Australian rules are similar to those of American football called gridiron. Like gridiron, rugby football calls for the use of two teams on each side of the playing field. The primary difference is that in rugby football players are allowed to wear more than one uniform, unlike football called American where a uniform is the only item of clothing allowed. However, rugby football allows for two substitution players at any time, allowing for eleven men on the field at any given time.

Finally, the game that most Americans think of when the words 'rugby' and 'football' are uttered is American football - also known as the National Football League.
